Saul is a fascinating character and this is astonishing work from Röhrig, a performance of such magnitude that such a film requires, Röhrig is a complete force of nature.Ĭredit must go to cinematographer Mátyás Erdély for capturing Röhrig in this way, Erdély's work is equally as incredible. He's somehow sympathetic as he forced through this ordeal, but also villainous as he continues on his selfish endeavour, risking his own life, showing little care for those around him, inviting the wolves in to chase them all down. But in an instance, Röhrig can physically tense up and recontextualise Saul's experience, or let a quick, slight change in his expression convey just as much. As Saul, Géza Röhrig gives an outstanding performance, his permanently stoic, steely demeanour speaks volumes to what lies beneath, the inevitable anguish and panic that he is forced to cover up. Shot in excruciatingly close, intense angles, the film drops us right into the eye of the storm, right into the terrifying mechanics of the Holocaust, and chains us to the titular Saul. László Nemes' Son of Saul is a staggering achievement, a brutal, visceral film of the highest order, a physical, mental and emotional ordeal that will shake even the sturdiest and staunchest of viewers. It's not so much like being crushed and swallowed by the jaws of the monster instantly, it's like lying in its jaws and letting it slowly clamp down on you, only to try and pry your way out at any given moment.
